Top Gear Photography by Scotty Bartells

Well where do we start!

Its been a hard road so far, but look at how far we have come. I (Scotty) started the TopGear Photography name a while back, but stopped using it due to another person having registered the .com domain to it! Well since they haven't even updated their site since 2006 and are american based, a mate reminded me that I could still register the .net domain, make a site, load up the photos are share with you my photos and my way into photography.

TopGear Photography is still pretty new, we have covered events so far ranging from Gazzanationals which we scored a role in the DVD as hosting the Photo Gallery and becoming the Official Gazzanationals Vol.2 Photographer and 2 Magazine Articles, The KPM Motorsports Dyno Day and the Extreme Horsepower Show both bought by Jason Gray of Street Holdens Magazine. Time will tell for future events!.

My goal as a photographer is not to get my foot in the door as a photographer but to kick it down and show everyone what I can do, and what other people can't. Peter Brock once said "Bite off more than you can chew, and then chew like hell!"...Well that basically describes my attitude and outlook towards this industry! Your coming into an industry that doesn't need you. So if your going to ask for oppurtunities, don't even bother. Get out there, do your stuff and show people who you are and what you can do. There's no such thing as a free lunch or easy money.

I first started snapping pictures at the debut of Gazzanationals back when Gary and Deby Myers first started the show with a Fuji Finepix s5500 Digital Camera. Nowadays you can buy one of these for a reasonably small amount of pocket change, but the photos from that camera got my foot in the door with Gary and Deby and earned myself a media pass for the following year's event.

Now, I was trackside at Gazzanationals 2, I got some awesome photos, outdid some of the guys there with $2000 cameras with a $300 amatuer camera and earned more respect. This is when I thought up the name 'TopGear Photography'.

Well, seeing as now I have my Canon 400d DSLR, 18-55mm lens, 75-300 lens, I approached Les Adams - Organiser of Springnats in Victoria. Les threw me a media pass and a chance to get myself a name. After those 3 days nothing was the same, I threw those pics up onto my photobucket account, got the photo centre at Harvey Norman to print me up a load of photos and showed everyone...This is pretty much where it began to get serious. that was Janaury 2006..

One Year has gone by since Murray Bridge Autofest, And over a year since Gazzanationals 2..

Now im shooting with a Canon 400d, 18-55mm + 75-300mm lens, 430ex E-TTL Speedlite, Canon Diffuser, Optitek Tripod, Mono Pod, a Laptop with Photoshop, and I travel with all of this regularly. Over $2000 worth of camera gear, and $1500 worth of Laptop and Programs. Not bad from a $300 week wage. I also have done a few cash jobs for mates, including photoshoots and a bit of respray work on weekends to pay for it all. Theres not many hours a week where i get to sit on my ass and have a few drinks. To be doing this stuff takes up most of your spare time.

I try to cover most events, anything that I can pay my way to with my $300 week apprenticeship wage. I have a car loan, a mobile phone on a plan so theres $100 a week gone, $100 for fuel and food for the week, considering I drive a v8 for a daily, that leaves me with $5.30 for lunch money for the week, and $100 left to get me to these places you see in my gallery.

I try to set it out the way I see it so people can really appreciate what I do. I don't earn big money, I'm just a young Australian with goals and ambitions I will achieve but it won't be easy. Then again if it was, it wouldn't be worth it. I beleive by trying my hardest, seeking special offers and showing people what I can do will eventually pay off. Theres no point expecting anything. I do this all for myself as a hobby. Anything that i get out of it is a bonus.

Regards, Scotty.
